AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday expressed willingness to join a broader opposition alliance in Uttar Pradesh for the 2027 Assembly elections, saying his party is prepared to work with others if the objective is to keep the BJP out of power.
The Hyderabad MP, however, made it clear that any electoral understanding would have to be based on equality rather than political tokenism. He said AIMIM would not accept a marginal role within a larger coalition.

Speaking to ANI, Owaisi said his party was open to an alliance arrangement but expected to be treated as an equal partner.
“We are prepared to form an alliance to prevent the BJP from returning to power in Uttar Pradesh, provided we are treated with respect and accorded equal status within that alliance,” he said.
AIMIM rejects subordinate role in opposition politics
The AIMIM chief reiterated the same position while addressing a public gathering in Matera on Sunday. He argued that opposition unity should not be limited to electoral arithmetic and must also involve meaningful political participation.
“If anyone wants to come together to stop the BJP, we are ready. But it has to be an alliance based on dignity and equality. We will not accept being treated as a party meant only to spread the carpet for others. The discussion must now be about political participation and a fair share in power,” Owaisi said.
His remarks come as political parties begin laying the groundwork for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh contest.
Shaukat Ali named Matera candidate
During the Matera event, Owaisi also announced AIMIM’s Uttar Pradesh unit president Shaukat Ali as the party’s candidate from the Matera Assembly constituency. The seat is currently represented by a Samajwadi Party legislator.
AIMIM had contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh in alliance with Apna Dal (Kamerawadi).
In his latest remarks, however, Owaisi did not name any party while speaking about a possible opposition alliance for the 2027 Assembly elections.
His comments come at a time when political parties in Uttar Pradesh have begun positioning themselves ahead of the next Assembly contest.
